After the Dillinger Escape Plan's epic set, it seemed like Mastodon had their work cut out for themselves. After all, how do you come out on stage after another band has been running around like they're on fire for 45-minutes straight?
Well, if you're Mastodon, you come out like professionals, get into a 7-foot wide power stance, and proceed to blow everyone's minds for about two hours with crushing, Grammy-nominated metal.
My brother Chris and I shot this gig for Q Magazine and had a blast.
Photographer's Notes:
Cameras Used:
- Nikon D3
- Nikon D700
Lenses Used:
Mastodon's performance was fantastic. They just have this pummeling, steamrolling kind of intensity in which the intensity builds through the entire show.
I have to admit, though, that it's kind of exhausting to photograph with AAA (I know, cry me a river). What having all-access to this show was nice for was the luxury of being able to wait out stretches of songs in which the lighting was poor. It's no secret that Mastodon love deep color washes, so this extra time to shoot when the stage wasn't entirely say, green or red or blue, was a nice bonus.
For this set, the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 was the hero lens, with it covering much of the set, and supplementary support from the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR.
