Jane's Addiction kicked off their 2012 US tour for The Great Escape Artist at the Pageant with force, delivering a tight, 14-song set to a very sold out house.

First off, sorry to Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney. As much as I dislike doing it, I made the executive decision to focus on Perry Ferrell and Dave Navarro for this show. With a packed pit, a high stage and plenty of monitors at eye level, this show possessed enough challenges that I wanted to maximize my shooting by focusing in on Ferrell and Navarro, rather than cover all band members.
While it's always my best intention to shoot everyone on stage (yes, even drummers), I'd rather nail a great shot of one or two performers rather than come home with mediocre/merely acceptable shots of an entire group. For any fans reading this, I hope you understand.
This was one of those strange shows I could have shot entirely with the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8. Shows that can put both of these lenses to the test in seemingly equal measure are rare, but Jane's Addiction, and Perry Ferrell in particular, just created that kind of shooting situation.
But if I had to use just one lens, it would have been the midrange 24-70mm f/2.8, no questions asked. The 24mm wide angle on full-frame was wide enough to get away with a lot of the “up close” action, while the 70mm gave enough range, as both Navarro and Ferrell kept relatively close to the stage.
