The ever-fantastic Grace Potter and the Nocturnals kicked off their 2013 tour at one and only Pageant concert club. I was excited for this show before I found out that it was the tour opener, but even more so after the fact.

The band kicked off the show with the high energy Paris and just steamrolled from there.

This show was incredibly challenging, but also hugely fun to shoot. First, the challenges.

When she's not behind the keys, Grace Potter is incredibly active on stage. Exhibit A: Hair whips. Lots of hair whips. Lots of movement from Grace Potter away from the mic, the kind of stuff that drives DSLR autofocus crazy trying to keep up.

Aside from the constant issue of motion blur, lighting for this show was all over the place. For every second of white light, there were two or three of crazily saturated accent lighting.

For this gig, I shot with the Nikon D800. While the D800 and its massive 36mp resolution is probably not the first choice for most when it comes to event-based photography (including live music photography), I have to say that this camera was a stone cold champ for this show. And that's only shooting one camera body, too.

Even with the slower frame rate, the clean high ISO performance of the D800 was fantastic for this gig, where I was shooting at ISO 3200 as a baseline. Just add in the fast focusing Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and I was good to go.
