I'll be frank: The Dillinger Escape Plan are probably the only band that may actually elicit fear from me as I wait for them to take the stage. I've shot DEP several times now, and, simply put, their show is a visceral assault on the senses.

Photographer's Notes:

Cameras Used:

  • Nikon D3
  • Nikon D700

Lenses Used:

For their entrance, the band generally takes the stage in the relative dark, with strobe lights flickering. For me, this is always a thrill – it seems like anything can happen. Invariably, the band explodes on stage, complimented by strobe lights and flaring light from the back of the stage.

At the front of the stage, there are two small risers with uplights – when the band members are near these boxes, they're the “easiest” and most consistent sources of light. For everything else, you have to be lucky or quick – preferably both.

For all this challenge, what you get with the Dillinger Escape Plan is the chance to shoot one of the most intense and craziest live shows around – one that I always look forward to photographing.
