Supporting HIM at the Pageant, We Are The Fallen rocked the stage with a dark and moody performance. Carly Smithson led the charge on vocals along side longtime Evanescence members Ben Moody, John LeCompt, and Rocky Gray and industry veteran Marty O'Brien.
Photographers' Notes:
We Are The Fallen were easily the most challenging subjects of the tour with HIM. Even the night's starters, Drive A, had lighting that was a little more forgiving to photography.
However, that said, We Are The Fallen were also the most dynamic group of the night in terms of movement, and for that reason alone this was a great shoot. Ben Moody in particular was a very fun subject who was more than willing to mug for the camera. He made eye contact and posed on a few occasions – unfortunately, these moments were when the stage was basically pitch black.
Between the relative lack of lights and the singer's near constant movement, the most tricky subject of the set was singer Carly Smithson. Still, with enough hustle, luck, and pure serendipity, anything is possible in live music photography. There a few shots of Carla in this set where her face is literally being lit by the autofocus assist light from someone's camera (specifically, 12 & 13 in the slideshow). Hey, whatever works.
As an aside, the real irony of live music photography is that the biggest shows – those huge gigs in arenas and amphitheaters with huge production – are often the easiest to shoot.
End Notes:
If you haven't seen them, check out the shots of HIM and Dommin from this show, and stay tuned for Drive A, coming up.
