The Devil Wears Prada are one of my favorite bands to photograph – the intensity they bring to the stage is always immense, period. So, it was with a little apprehension that I saw that they were slated to play at 8:20 PM – the last band of the day at Warped Tour. While a June or early July slot at this time would have been relatively light, the sun was sinking fast even as A Day To Remember were on the Teggart stage.
By the time The Devil Wears Prada came out, only a pair of backlights and the fading dusk sky of the blue hour were lighting the stage.

This show was dark. Really dark. Like ISO 12800 dark.
The one exception to Warped Tour's generally abundant open shade stages, if not in full-on sun, is the last one or two bands, which can play when the sun is setting or down completely. Such was the case with the Devil Wears Prada, who played when the faint blue of the sky was all that light the front of the band.
That, and another photographer's AF assist lights, which kept shining on singer Mike Hranica's face during the three song limit. I thought about telling the photographer to turn it off – let's face it, the AF assist light is like a small flashlight lighting up for 2 seconds every time it's used – but then I realized that it was the only thing lighting Mike's face during the end of the allotted shooting.
With no front-lighting and pretty much zero usable contrast, I have to thank that annoying little AF assist light. In this light, even the Nikon D3 was having trouble keeping up with the band.
Lighting aside, TDWP put on a killer show, as always. I'm already looking forward to the next chance to shoot them – let's hope it's soon.
