Whenever I hear that Greek Fire has a show, I make it a point to shoot it whenever possible. These guys just put on a show that's incredibly thrilling for their fans and fantastic for photographers. This show was all the more so a must-see because it marked the long-awaited return of drummer Johnny Venus.
Long story short, Johnny was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and has spent spent most of 2012 whooping leukemia's ass. This show at Pop's marked the official hometown return for this hero.

Greek Fire always do something in their shows that make you feel like you're watching something special unfold. It's always a pleasure to shoot.
For this show, I mainly used the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 on the Nikon D3. My go-to combination, especially for a club like Pop's where the stage isn't super high and the stage is nice and cozy. Shooting smaller venues like Pop's is actually a great option for music photographers who are starting out, because there's just a ton to work with. The angles on all the band members are fantastic, and the stage size means that it's possible to catching almost everything on stage instead of running around playing Whac-A-Mole.
