Grace Potter's performance opening up for The Avett Brothers blew me away. Even with almost no light on the stage and steep shooting angles, the opportunity to capture a little of her charisma was a pleasure.
With a very dim stage treatment, I turned to Nikon f/1.4 primes to help open up the darkness.
Photographer’s Notes:
I had the feeling that this show was going to be dark, so I came prepared with a kit of Nikon's new f/1.4 primes. Intuition paid off, because Grace Potter's performance was dramatically dim during the first three songs and used the high house rig exclusively.

My most used lens was by far the little Nikon 50mm f/1.4, the cheapest lens of the bunch. The focal length proved just about perfect for the stage-front shooting I did at this show and offered a great field of view on the full-frame Nikon D3. Check out my recent review of the 50mm if you're interested in learning more about this lens.
Next in line of utility was the Nikon 85mm f/1.4, which provided a slightly tighter crop and reach to add a little variety to the set.
Even shooting wide open or very close to it, these primes did extremely well with the lighting, with little flare and great contrast.
