Bathed under moody lighting, Manchester Orchestra threw down a raw set opening for Brand New at the Pageant. This was a dark show, but plenty of haze over the stage provided a nice opportunity to play with exposure and create a more interesting image than would be possible with a “faithful” capture.
Photographer's Notes:
There was essentially zero light from the front on singer Andy Hull, but ample backlighting gave me the freedom to overexpose massively, kicking up the presence of the backlights to dramatic effect. Slow shutter speeds, a fast 50mm, and high ISO helped enable this approach.
The basic intent was to expose of Andy Hull's face as much as possible and let the background lights fall wherever they might – hopefully bright and maybe even a little heavenly.
The lighting scheme for this set was pretty much an alternating mix of blue/purple and red/orange washes.
