Photographer’s Notes:
Had a blast photographing this concert. Any gig that involves Radiohead and catchflash is OK by me.
That, and a spread in SPIN:
Lighting:
The lighting for this show and its first three songs was relatively simple. Three distinct color treatments for each song – red, green, and blue, respectively. During the first song and its dull reddish hue, it was a actually a little concerning to think of what might be in store for all the press photographers. When the rich, eerie green of the second song made the show come to life from a photography perspective fo rme.
Lenses & Gear:
I shot this gig using the D3 with the trio of my f/2.8 zooms: 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200mm f/2.8.
Exposure & Metering:
For the majority of the set, I shot at 1/200 and f/2.8 at ISO 3200, though ISO 6400 cam into play as well for some of the darker portions of the set.
During the dimmest part of the first song, which was easily the darkest of the alloted three, I dropped the shutter speed to 1/25 for a shot at 14mm. For the third song, I went up to 1/250 for a few sequences, bumping up to 1/500 for the brightest portions of the lighting scheme.
End Notes:

Great shots of one of my favorite bands! I love shot 7. Congrats on the spread in SPIN. I hope I’m lucky enough to be able to photograph them one day.
Hey Scott,
Thanks for the comment – can’t wait to catch Radiohead when they’re touring again. I felt pretty lucky to catch them twice in 2009 – here for this show, and then again at Lollapalooza.
Amaizing photoworks…
Which one you used the most from the trio f/2.8?
Hi Anggara,
Thanks for the kind words. Out of the lenses I used, I’d say that the 70-200mm f/2.8 saw a bit of action. Due to the large monitors set up and the relative height of the stage, I think the telephoto might have just barely pulled ahead of the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8.
Awesome shots – my favourite band and I’ve yet to see them live! Thanks for sharing!
Hey Rob,
Thanks for the comment, hope you get to see Radiohead live next time around, and that it isn’t too long of a wait. Cheers.
Hi Todd,
awesome set. I also love the 7th shot and Thom looking so rascally in some of your pictures. Did I already mention that I like the new theme, especially the top of the site, but the dark gray and white graphic dose not really match the black colour below. When I added following you on twitter I noticed that you “stole” my design idea, but I don’t bother, go for it. LOL
Cheers, Sven
Hey Sven,
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, Thom was looking pretty rascally here – he looked like he was having fun. That 7th shot was made with the Nikon 14-24mm – with the symmetry of the light rods, I knew that I had to try for something like that.
Thanks for the comments on the new site design, I’ll check out that issue – I appreciate it!
Todd,
Was looking forward to your photos of this show and it all looks awesome. Love the red lighting and background of No. 6.
Btw, did you ever get a chance to shoot Oasis?
John
Hey John,
I haven’t had the pleasure of photographing Oasis, though I’d love to. Thanks for feedback on these photos of Radiohead. Cheers.
