Shooting Notes:

The band performed a very active set that found lots of movement in frontman Scot Stoltz. The other members of the group were more stationary, which balanced out the shoot. The band members at the front of the stage performed on platforms that contained upward facing lights, which made for an nice challenge in timing shots with their optimal placements over the lights.

Lighting:

Lighting for this performance was an interesting mix of underlighting and backlighting, with relatively little front lighting from the mix. This is the most recent in a string of acts have employed underlighting as a primary light source. Other examples include recent performances by Avenged Sevenfold, Operator, and Bleeding Through, all of which utilized similar lighting schemes.

The backlighting drew on a dull orange wash for much of the performance, while green and white lights added to the mix.

Exposure:

Thanks to the steady underlighting, which provided the majority of the image-forming light for these images, exposure was very consistent at f/2.8, 1/160, and ISO 800. For images lit by the high frontlighting, ISO 1600 was more appropriate.

Lenses:

Thanks to the relatively bright and contrasty underlighting, I shot with the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 for the entirety of the set. Aside from a few wide shots at 17mm, the majority of the images were made between 30mm and 50mm.

Hey Sarah! Thanks for the feedback. This was a pretty casual shoot, especially with the constant lighting from the platforms on which the lead and two guitarists performed. Definitely a relaxed shoot that also provided some nice images.

    Thanks again.
