Morningwood @ Mississippi Nights — 2006.04.25

I just found and processed some old images of guitarist Richard Steel performing with Morningwood at Mississippi Nights, in their support of The Sounds. While the lighting for the openers was generally pretty poor, Steel’s rock antics and a few choice lighting effects saved the set from complete photographic obscurity.

Shot at 17mm, the wide-angle of the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 was key in capturing Steel’s full pose, even as I was only a few feet away. Between the Gibson Flying V, dirty metal hair, and red Chucks, and Black Sabbath t-shirt, Steel is just living the dream.

While the majority of Morningwood’s set, like that of the Sounds, was lit by alternating blue and red washes, there were a few moments of more intense key-lighting. Luckily, though there was no photo pit for this show, my position was perfect for catching Steel backlit on a few occasions, which is one effect I’m always on the lookout for. The guitarist certainly had the hair to make this staple trick sing.
