Concert photography with Telephoto Lenses

While my normal go-to lens for indoor concert photography is the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8, I've been using telephoto lenses more and more. The highly utilitarian wide-to-short-tele midrange lens excels in from the pit for most venues, but some situations can benefit from the graces of a long lens, which can bring the action to the photographer and create more flattering perspectives than shorter focal lengths.

Final Fantasy @ the Creepy Crawl — 2006.08.22

Combining AutoViewer and Wordpress

I've added a small portfolio to the static pages, which ended up being a slight challenge since Wordpress does not get along with Flash apps as easily as it should. Of course, the image gallery app I wanted to use, AutoViewer by Felix Turner at AirtightInteractive.com, is a slick, Flash-based slideshow, so a workaround was in order.

Pitchfork: The Gear That Worked

At last year's festival, point & shoot cameras seemed to dominate the photo pit, with DSLRs in the minority. This year saw a reversal of that showing, as the Pitchfork Music Festival attracted bigger media outlets and appropriately bigger cameras.

Fiction Plane @ the Scottrade Center

Opening for the Police, Fiction Plane played to what would be a nearly sold-out crow at the Scottrade Center July 2. Fronted by Sting's son, Joe Sumner, the band put on a surprisingly solid set. As with the later performance by the Police, I mostly used telephotos for these shots, utilizing the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR and 85mm f/1.4 for the majority of the images.

Pitchfork Music Festival 2007: Sunday

The Pitchfork 2007 festivities continued Sunday, with clear skies, persistent sun, and, of course, the noise. Highlights included Junior Boys, Jamie Lidell, Of Montreal, and De La Soul's energetic closer, with special guest Prince Paul.

Pitchfork Music Festival 2007: Saturday

15,000 dirty hipsters, 2,700 shutter actuations, 39 bands, 1 free Chipotle burrito, and a fistful of business cards later, the dusty hipster-meet that is the Pitchfork Music Festival has come and gone for 2007. As always, Chicago was a blast, with great food and friends, though the ever-elusive Chicago-style hotdog remained just out of reach. I've just finished up images from Saturday, the first full day of the Pitchfork Music Festival, and the first day I covered of the event.

Back from Pitchfork

I'm back from a weekend trip to Chicago, where I covered two days of the three-day 2007 Pitchfork Music Festival. I photographed the twenty bands on the main Aluminum and Connector stages and shot about 2,700 frames. Some highlight's from the festival included Battles, Of Montreal, Jamie Lidell, and Junior Boys. I'll be posting a few images soon, as well as a summary of what worked and what didn't work, with regard to gear, technique, and planning.

Nikon 85mm f/1.4: For Chan and Yoko

Aside from the D2x, 17-55, and 70-200, I've decided to leave the rest of my gear. But I'm taking the Nikon 85mm f/1.4, if only for Cat Power and Yoko Ono. And possibly Neko Case. After the images the fast telephoto delivered for Morrissey, I'm convinced it may be valuable in the twilight hours when those artists perform.

Mid-Year Concert Report 2007

The 2007 year got off nice start with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Janurary, followed by a slow string of acts including the Shins, the Scissor Sisters, and dance-punk favorites the Faint. Moving into Spring saw a little bump, with shows like the Decemberists, Norah Jones, and the one and only Morrissey. Summer has been relatively slow for shows, with the Police reunion tour being one notable highlight before the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this coming weekend. In addition, the Deftones' concert with Japanese rockers Dir en grey proved to be a pleasant surprise. And, while poor for photography, the National's performance at the Duck Room was a treat.

Morrissey @ the Pageant 2007.05.22

Performing to a sold out house on his birthday, May 22, Morrissey was greeted by a legion of fans ready to celebrate. As he sauntered out to take center stage, obviously relishing the applause and rapt attention, Morrissey said simply, "I've come to wish me an unhappy birthday." This tongue-in-cheek comment provided the perfect calm pause before the ex-Smiths frontman launched into the old anthem The Queen Is Dead.

The Deftones @ the Pageant — 2007.06.19

The Deftones rolled into St. Louis with strong support from J-rockers Dir en grey and prog-rock, post-hardcore band The Fall of Troy, who started off the night with tight musicianship and high energy.
